I try to select text for copy/highlight, and a solid black rectangle appears, blocking what I am selecting, and I cannot see what I am selecting at all. This is just now started.

    Hi hulkoakey,

We are sorry you are encountering this issue for it might have affected your daily work!

We appreciate your understanding that sometimes the initial suggestions may not resolve the problem as expected. However, together we can get this issue resolved.

I carried out a test with the latest version number of Word app and I couldn’t reproduce the same issue in our environment.

Please first check whether you are using the latest version number of Office apps. If not, I suggest you update your Office to the latest version, restart your Mac and then do a test to see the result.  The latest version of Microsoft 365 for Mac is 16.60 (22041000). To check version, open any Office app such as Word, go to the Word menu and choose About Word.

Manually update Office apps if the version appears lower than the one mentioned above. Click Help in the menu bar at the top of the screen. > Click Check for Updates.

For some reason if Office apps still didn’t update, then please download the Update packagefrom this article.

Meanwhile, I will appreciate you can try the normal troubleshooting steps below and tell us the result.

    1. Try to reboot Mac in safe mode and determine whether background programs are causing the issue. For detailed information, please check this article.
    2. I suggest that you also check this: Text highlighting (Word for Mac) - Microsoft Community , you can go to: System Preferences-Accessibility-Display and change the highlight background to check if it will help.

If the above suggestions don’t work for you, could you provide the information below?

    1. Please feel free to upload a full screenshot of the Account page. Go to Word Menu> About Word, to determine the present Version of your Office software.
    2. Include that in your reply as well as indicating which release of macOS you're using. You can access the page via clicking Apple Menu>About this Mac.
    3. Could you provide the screenshot of “a solid black rectangle” that appears?
    4. May I know if the other Office applications and non-Office applications have the same problem?

Note: While uploading related screenshots, please remember to remove any private information.

    I appreciate your understanding!

    Best Regards,

    Edwine
