I have an issue where hyperlinks to an external source work when using the MS Excel application, however when using the online in-browser version of MS Excel the links do not work. Is there a workaround?

    Hi,

    Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Due to the feature limitation, Excel Online cannot direct users to the local path file with the hyperlink currently. As a workaround, click Open in Excel button on Excel Online to open the file from local Excel client.

If your concern persists, may I have some more details about the External Hyperlinks like if it directs to a local Excel file/data range, or a file URL like OneDrive location? Also, if there will show any error/warning message or just simply no response when clicking the link? We'd like to test for you based on the scenario you meet.

    Best Regards,

    Mia

    Hi Mia,

Thank you for your prompt response. Yes, a workaround is to open in desktop app - however the issue with that is the many users accessing the file experience slow response times.

The snip below is the error message that pops up when accessing the external hyperlink via the MS Excel browser version (no issue when opening in the client application).

As you stated, the limitation with accessing external hyperlinks in the browser version is likely the issue. Thank you for your time and I look forward to when future updates resolve this issue.
