Disabled sort function

I'm using Excel with Windows 11 on a single laptop, not connected to any network. I have received a spreadsheet from a colleague as an email attachment. I can open the spreadsheet, but when I try to sort the data in it the sort function is disabled. However, my colleague who sent the spreadsheet tells me he can sort the data on his version. What do I need to do to enable the sort function?

OK, I've found the cause, if not the reason behind the cause. The original data was generated by someone other than my colleague. If you include the first 6 rows of data in the sort range the sort function is disabled, but if the first 6 rows are excluded the sort function works. There is apparently no difference in the data format between the first 6 rows and the rest of the data. I have no idea what is causing this problem,so if anyone out there would like to hazard a guess I would be very interested in heasring from you.

    Hi Roger G!

    Thank you for the response.

I will suggest you copy all the content of the spreadsheet to a new workbook and then save it with a new name.

Also, the colleague may be contacted to remove and then remove any restriction on the data.

    Kind Regards, Shakiru

    Hi Roger G!

Thank you for writing to the Microsoft Answer Community Forum, I am Shakiru, an independent advisor and a user like you, and I am glad to be helping you out today.

I'm sorry, have you checked the sort under the Data Menu and also in the customize ribbon? also do ask the colleague if the Excel sheet is not locked. if locked, you may need to contact him/her for the password to unlock it

However, Please check the customized ribbon: Click on File Menu> select options> select the customize ribbon> Search for Sort under Sort and filter in the main tab, if missing then add from the popular tab to the main tab Also, you can formula to sort, please check here on how to use the sort function: https://support.microsoft.com/office/22f63bd0-ccc8-492f-953d-c20e8e44b86c

    Kind Regards, Shakiru

If the colleague protected the sheet, you will need to unprotect it (which may require getting the password) or you may need a new, unprotected version from your colleague .
