Problem with Headers

I have a letter master with different headers for the first and second pages. When a letter is only one page, I want to delete the second page, including its header design. But when I delete the section break that is required to not have the same header appear on the second page, it deletes the entire header from the first page. How can this be fixed?

No section break is needed nor is one desireable.

See:

Deleting section breaks will remove header information.

Actually, the reason I added a section break was so that I could have different width margins on the second page as well. My header on the first page is set up with both right justified info on the top right (name, address, etc.) and a sidebar on the left. But the second page won't have that sidebar, so I was going to have different margins, but I guess maybe that won't work.

Read the first two pages I linked. See also Different Margins on First Page. You do not need or want different Word margins, as such to get this effect. You can get the effect of different margins by using textboxes or frames in your first-page header. You can place things in the header that actually appear outside the header area (such as your sidebar).

For information about marginal text, see also:

See also my Letterhead Textboxes and Styles Tutorial. It has different templates showing both frames and textboxes.

Here is a screenshot from that tutorial.

Again, both pages have identical margins on all sides. No section break is used. The black text in it shows the material in the body of the document, constrained by the frames or textboxes.

Set the different first page option. Now your template will display the second page header/footer on the first page. Cut and paste that info to the second page.

Not true: the First Page Header will be blank; the primary header will appear on the second page (if any). But the First Page Header content from the original template can be copy/pasted into the First Page Header of the new template.

    Hi SheriKling,

I'm Michelle and I'd be glad to help you out with your query or concern.

Please follow the instructions or resolutions given by a Microsoft Ambassador, Doug here:

Before setting the Different First Page option, you need to copy (or cut) the information that is presently in the header so that after setting that option, you can paste it into the First Page Header. Then, if you copied, go to the second page and remove the content from the Primary Header.

I hope this information helps you. If you have any questions, please do let me know and I'll be more than happy to assist you further with this.

    Best Regards,

    Michelle
