Delete SharePoint site

Dear users,

I recently created a site in SharePoint and now want to delete it. But in the "Site settings" there is no "Site information" point so that I can't delete the site according to the instruction in the Microsoft help. I'm the only user and have full site control. Please, advise how to delete it.

Why is it possible to create sites, but denied deleting them? That's strange.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Victor,

Thank you for posting back and share these detailed information and your test result.

From the screenshot you provided, we can see that you don't have option to access Advanced Permissions settings. So we suppose you don't have full control permission for the site.

And it seems like you cannot access SharePoint Admin Center.

So far, from all the information you provided, we're afraid the only option is that you contact the Microsoft 365 global administrator or SharePoint admin to help you delete that site, they have all related permission to perform this action. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

We appreciate your time and effort.

Hope you stay safe and healthy always!

    Sincerely,

    Tina | Microsoft Community Moderator

    Dear Victor,

Good day! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are glad to help you.

According to your description, you cannot delete a SharePoint site as there is no Site information in site settings in the SharePoint site.

It looks like you don't have Site information in settings as shown below.

We did a test in a SharePoint site and we cannot reproduce the issue.

For the situation you encountered, we do understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it.

In this situation, since Microsoft 365 global admin and SharePoint admin have permission to delete SharePoint site from SharePoint admin center, on one hand, we recommend you try to contact either of them and help you delete the site. For reference: Delete a site - SharePoint in Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Docs

On the other hand, we'd like to confirm the following information for troubleshooting. Appreciate your patience and understanding.

1.How did you create the SharePoint site? From SharePoint home page>Create site>choose "Team site"?

2.Does the same situation appear in a specific SharePoint site? Can you see "Site information" in Settings in other SharePoint sites?

3.Could you share a screenshot about "in the "Site settings" there is no "Site information" point"?

We look forward to your reply. Thanks for your cooperation.

Hope you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,

    Hello Tina,

Thank you very much for the quick reply and help!

    Regarding your questions:

    • Yes, I created Team site from SharePoint home page with the button “Create site”.
    • Yes, this situation appears only for the specific site. I can see "Site information" in “Site settings” in other SharePoint sites.
    • I'm shearing the screenshots you've asked about. Sorry, they are in Russian. Can't select English for Office 365 because it is preset by our organization.

On top of that today I’ve accidentally learnt that my colleague has absolutely the same issue. There are two links below to my and my coworker's site without necessary control point "Site information" in the "Site settings" menu:

    • https://***.sharepoint.com/teams/ComplexProjects

If you need some more information/clarifiactions/translation for the screenshots, please, write me. Hope it will help to cope with the problem.

    Best regards, Victor.

    Hi Victor,

Thank you for posting back and sharing these detailed information with us.

It looks like only a specific SharePoint site doesn't have "Site information" in Settings. And your coworker has a SharePoint site having the same situation.

I double check the SharePoint sites link you provided, it's a bit different from SharePoint team site I create from SharePoint home page > Create site > choose "Team site".

The link you provide is like https://***.sharepoint.com/teams/sitename

While when I create SharePoint team site in SharePoint home page, the link is like

    https://***.sharepoint.com/sites/sitename

I tested further and found I can create SharePoint site with the similar link as yours from SharePoint Admin Center>Active Site>Create>Other Options>Choose a template from More templates>then I can choose teams template.

After that, when I opened the created team site, I found I cannot delete site from Settings>Site Information, because there is no "Delete site" option.

It looks like this kind of team site cannot be deleted by using the path Settings>Site Information>Delete site.

In this situation, I recommend you try following ways and see if you can delete the SharePoint site:

1.Access Site Settings page by using the following link:

    https://***.sharepoint.com/teams/sitename/_layouts/15/settings.aspx

Note: please adjust the link to apply to the situation on your side.

Then check if you can see Delete this site in Site Actions, as shown below

2.If you don't have Delete this site option on this page, you may try following link to access the delete site page: https://***.sharepoint.com/teams/sitename/_layouts/15/deleteweb.aspx

Note: please adjust the link to apply to the situation on your side.

However, if you still cannot delete the SharePoint site, since only a specific SharePoint site has the issue and you just need to delete the site, I would recommend you try to contact your Microsoft 365 global admin or SharePoint admin, they have permission to help you delete the site from SharePoint Admin Center.

    Appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

If you have any questions about the 2 links I mentioned above, you can post back and I will help you.

We hope you have a nice day and stay safe!

    Sincerely,

    Tina | Microsoft Community Moderator

    Hello Tina,

    Thanks for your recommendations!

Unfortunately for the problematic site: https://***.sharepoint.com/teams/AEDTrainingEducation there is very limited “Site settings” menu. Please see it below. There are only two options: “Look and Feel” and “Site Administration”.

If I try to go with direct link: https://***.sharepoint.com/teams/AEDTrainingEducation/_layouts/15/deleteweb.aspx then it shows window with the message: “You don’t have access to this page” and button “Request for access”.

Strange that for the normally controlled site: https://***.sharepoint.com/teams/AEDTrainingEducationnew “Site settings” also looks differently than on your screenshot. Please see it below. “Site Actions” has only 3 options: “Manage site features”, “Enable search configuration export”, “Reset to site definition”. There is not “Delete this site option”. But I can delete the site with the standard recommended set of actions: “Settings” - “Site information” – “Delete site”.

So, with additional information given could you advise if I have the only option to go to a company Microsoft 365 global or SharePoint admin or there are any other variants how to solve the issue.

Thanks and have a good day!

P.S. Sorry one more time for not English screenshots. I can't change the language. It is predifened by the company. If there is need to have them translated, please, let me know.

    With best regards,

    Victor.
