I am trying to wrote a paper for an english essay and I have to have headers for it. I add a header but it links to the other pages, so page 4 will still say page 1. I checked to make sure link previous is off, I followed tutorials, nothing is working. Some of the things I have to go to in the tutorials are greyed out so it wont let me do anything. What do I do to fix my headers?

If you still need more help, it would help us help you to know what you are dealing with.

You could link a sample document with the problem. See Why a sample file is important for troubleshooting. How to do it.

    See:

You want to be using a Page field.

You do not want section breaks to change page numbering, generally. See Numbering Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP for when you do.

If you have section breaks, make sure that your page number formatting is not set to restart at 1 for the sections where you want it to continue.
