Removing custom list styles from a document

I have a problem with some custom list styles I have created in Word for Mac.

I have had several attempts at creating an outline numbered list style I need for ATA standard documents, all of which have failed (either they do not operate as expected or crash Word for Mac). I have used the Styles Pane to "select all" and "clear all formatting" from the document which has removed all the list formatting I had previous applied. However the corrupt / incorrect custom list styles are still showing in the drop down. (see screen grab). So questions and queries arising .......

  • I cannot find a "Manage Styles" function in the Mac version. How do I delete these lists styles completely?
  • I named one of the list styles I created, but the style did not appear in the Styles Pane. What is the difference between a List Style and a Style shown in the Styles Pane?

  • I want to create a specific layout of Outline numbering which I will have in a template. Do I do this in the "Define New Multi-level list" (which doesn't seem to have a way to name it or identify it), or in the "Create new Style" and have to define each level individually (if so how do you link the Styles??)

Any help very gratefully received as this is driving me bonkers.

    >>Now I need to understand how indenting of styles and numbering levels interacts.
    <<

Indents (from the left) must be defined in the options for each level of the list. Indents set for the paragraph (or paragraph style) will be overridden in Word.

    From my page on Styles:

    Word for the Mac

According to Word guru John Korchok, one way to access the Organizer on versions of Word for the Mac is:

Choose Tools>Templates and Add-ins.

Click on the Organizer button.

This is similar to the methods in Windows.

    Dear Bryce M.,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

As per your description, in Mac Word any user-defined Styles are listed at the top of the Styles Pane starting directly below the Clear Formatting listing. And the User-defined Styles also appear at the beginning of the Style Gallery.

Based on my search here is found similar thread you may refer: Delete unused styles (MS Word for Mac OS)

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,

    Waqas Muhammad

Thank you for the response, but this does not answer my question. There appears to be two groups of styles - list styles created under the dropdown from the outline numbering button, and styles created from the "New Style" button in the styles pane. They do not seem to link, and styles created from the outline numbering button do not appear in the styles pane.

Also styles using a custom outline numbering scheme do not respond to using TAB to change the outline level.

I cannot find any guidance for Mac how to do the linking available in the Windows version

Windows has the option in customising outline style to line a level in the numbering scheme to a style from the style panel - e.g. link level 1 to the Heading 1 style. The Mac version of rod does not set to have this??

Does the Organizer dialog box exist in Word for Mac? In that case, you should be able to delete list styles from there.

For instructions on creating outline numbering in Word for Mac, see John Korchok's article at https://www.brandwares.com/bestpractices/2016/06/outline-numbering-in-word-for-os-x/.
