Text in Online Excel Cannot Overflow a Cell, Visually

I have created a Gantt chart using Excel (software) and saved on my OneDrive so that I can share it with others to view.

However, I have found that some of texts failed to overflow and they stopped somewhere when viewing the file using Online Excel.

Here is my Excel file:

I intend to let the text overflow in order to show the full texts without messing the cell height. It is totally fine when opening the file using Excel.exe but not in Online Excel. Below is some of the trials:

  • Opening the file using Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, in Windows 10. Same result.
  • Changing from View mode to Edit mode in Online Excel, same result
  • I thought border line was the problem, but erasing the border lines would not help neither.

I would not like to use "Merge and Centre" for the bars as if the bars are shorter than the texts, the texts will be cut off intentionally. I hope to display the full information. Therefore, I prefer text overflow.

Hi, I'm Elise, and I'd be happy to help with your issue.

This appears to currently be a limitation of the online version of Excel, it is not currently possible to change this behaviour.

The only further suggestion I can give is to submit feedback on the issue using the feedback hub app, you can find this in the start menu.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Kind Regards,

    Elise

Somehow I found that texts in Online Excel will automatically be cut off every 30 columns.

In my file the cut off columns are AE (31st column), BI (61st column) and CM (91st column).

I tried to copy and past the whole content without formatting to a new Online Excel to see what happened. The cut off columns are AD (30th column), BH (60th column) and CL (90th column) instead.
