Site page save as draft always causing issues

I just created a copy of a page, edited it but can't save a draft with my changes because of an error:

Changes not saved We're sorry, we encountered an unexpected error. Please refresh the page and try again.

Why are we still seeing these garbage issues in a mature product? Nothing seems to work properly first time and we have to waste time repeating things several times. Even when I refresh the page I get the same error.

I've been getting this same error when trying to publish one specific page, and found the source of the problem to be related to the "name or email address" section of the "Title area" web part. In my situation, the email account listed here was a generic mailbox for the department, which happened to have an "&" in the name and email address. Removing this account allows me to save the page without error, and re-adding this account will generate the error consistently.

For me, the issue was that we had a former employee populated as the author. Once I removed their email I was able to edit once again.

Thank you! This worked for me - A SharePoint page was refusing to save as a draft or republish when we tried to edit it, and giving no clue as to why apart from "We're sorry, we encountered an unexpected error. Please refresh the page and try again". After reading your tip, I noticed the header of the page listed as the author a member of staff who had recently left. I changed this to the member of staff who was now trying to edit the page, and it let us save and publish straight away. Very grateful for this advice!

It affects everyone that uses Sharepoint and has been reported by many others. I'm a SP admin so it's not related to the user's access. You can reproduce it if you copy a page and then try to edit it/

    Dear webbrewers:

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

I apologize for the inconvenience this situation has caused you. We understand that you could not save as draft and got the error message.

I didn't have a similar problem in my tests, so I would like to gather the following information from you:

    1. Have other users also encountered this situation on this page, and whether it will also happen to pages of other websites ? Based on the test results about if the situation will happen only on specific page or all pages, it helps us to confirm if the issue is related with the user account side.
    2. If other users(especially the admin account) in the organization will be able to save site page as draft successfully?

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Sincerely,

    Tin | Microsoft Community Moderator
