I am unable to create forms from an excel in sharepoint. When I change the location of the excel to OneDrive I am able to create the forms. Why is this happening?

My objective is to create an excel along with a form to capture the data. Now when I go to sharepoint and create an excel first, the default location is onedrive. At that point of time, I'm able to create a form and everything works smoothly. The moment, I change the location of the excel file from OneDrive to a sharepoint folder, the data from the form stops going to the excel. Apart from that, the option of Insert >> Form vanishes from excel.

The first screenshot is when the excel is located on OneDrive, whereas the second one is when its moved to sharepoint. No option to add form.

    Dear Dhaval,

Greetings! Thank you for posting in the Microsoft forum.

From your post, I understand that you do not see Forms option under Insert menu when the workbook is stored in SharePoint library but when it is in OneDrive for business, Forms option is visible.

The second screenshot in your post where Forms option is missing, may I know whether that workbook is stored in Classic (old) SharePoint site?

Based on my test and search, it seems like Forms for Excel is not available in classic SharePoint site. Forms for Excel only works on Modern SharePoint sites, more specifically it requires a Microsoft 365 Group to be associated with the site, screenshot below for reference.

If you wish and only if it fits your requirement, you can consider connecting your classic SharePoint site to Microsoft 365 group. Once you connect, Forms options will become available in Excel workbook in question.

Here were two articles that explain the process in SharePoint:

Before you connect classic site to Microsoft 365 group (i.e., convert to Modern site), there are few things to consider:

    1. This will convert the site to a modern SharePoint site with a new default modern home page.
    2. There are some classic features that are different or not available in the modern view. These include some column types and some customizations. For more detailed information, see Differences between the new and classic experiences for lists and libraries.

For detailed information about the difference between the two kinds, please see SharePoint classic and modern experiences - Microsoft Support

If my understanding above is not consistent with yours, you can post back and point that.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,
