Powerpoint graph structure does not update when source excel graph is changed

I have a column chart in excel with let's say three columns x1, x2, x3.

I have copied it and pasted into powerpoint presentation (Keep Source Formatting &Link Data) and "Automatic" update checkbox is checked.

Once excel chart values change everything is reflected in powerpoint chart when opening powerpoint and updating links.

However, if excel chart structure changes, let's say additional column x4 is added, powerpoint chart does not update accordingly (It looks like powerpoint chart is not linked with excel chart, but rather data in excel).

Is there a way to solve this/workaround to have powerpoint charts to remain identical to excel charts?

In creating the link, did you start in PPT and choose Insert Object | Create From File | Link?

If so, that's likely the problem.

Instead, start in Excel. Copy the chart there, then switch to PowerPoint and chose to Paste Special | As Excel Chart and checkmark Link.
