Upload failed - Excel cannot merge changes with the online file on SharePoint with Macros

Hello,

My team has an Excel file with shared editing access on SharePoint. Previously, there have been no problems syncing while multiple users are changing the document. We recently updated the document to a Macro-enabled version and put in some macros to automate some functions (in this case, searching through some other spreadsheets and pasting in dates). Since then, we often get the following errors:

This happens when two people are changing the file at the same time, but that "change" can be as simple as someone moving to a different tab while the autosave kicks in. This only happens (that I'm aware of) when people are using the file in the app. However, when you use the file online, you cannot use the macro functions. The online version shows the following errors on what, in the app version, are macro-linked buttons:

When you try to click them in the browser, you get the following error:

So has anyone else encountered this problem with macro-enabled Excel files? Like I said, this didn't happen until we updated the file with the automation macros. And more importantly, how can I fix it so my team stops losing their work when someone else saves theirs? I've looked online and can't find anything that helps.

Thank you in advance!

    Dear KACBr,

    Thank you for the reply.

For co-authoring Excel workbooks, the supported file format is .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xlsb. And I also tested the macro-enabled workbook on my side, there was no problem when saving.

I noticed you mentioned "I was concerned about the unsupported excel feature possibility", you can check the below part in this article: Excel file is locked for editing (microsoft.com)

About the registry key, you can first open the Registry Editor, and locate the above path: How to open Registry Editor in Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

For added protection, before making edits based on officially published Microsoft documentation, be sure to back up the registry. Then you can restore it if a problem occurs. For more information seeHow to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

    Dear KACBr,

Good day! Thank you for posting your query in our community. We are happy to help you.

I searched a lot about this issue on our side, I found some possible reasons which may could cause this issue:

Refer to this article: Collaborate on Excel workbooks at the same time with co-authoring, there are many possible cause for a sync conflict, generally, it can be:

Multiple people are making a change to the same thing.  This will sometimes cause conflict. My experience is, for example, when multiple users editing the same sheet but use filter/sort/custom view.

And I also found a member who has the similar issue provided a solution for it:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Edit at your own risk. Appreciate your cooperation in advance.

    Hi Jazlyn,

Thank you. I did see your reply on a related post, but it didn't really apply to my situation. I can't limit the number of users in it. I was concerned about the unsupported excel feature possibility, hence I asked if anyone else has seen this in a sheet with Macros enabled. If so, I can rework the sheet to remove the macros and just have a lot of formulas all over the place, but it will seriously diminish the functionality and increase the possibility for error, so I'd like to avoid that if I can.

As for the registry key, I'd love to try that option, I'm just not sure how to go about implementing it.

Ok! I'll give that a try and let you know how it works. Thanks!
