It seems the max function isn't working in Excel online for me. I followed MAX function.

Did you remember to format the cell as general or number and to use an = as the first character? Copy what you have from the formula bar and paste it in a message to show your usage.

In what way specifically is it not working? If it's returning 0 when you don't think it should, your numbers are probably stored as text.
