Errors when using shared link to SharePoint List Item

Hello,

Earlier today a SharePoint site owner reached out about an issue they are encountering with one of their SharePoint lists. When they select a specific item on the SharePoint List and then use one of the "Copy Link" or "Share" options, anyone then attempting to use that link gets the following error.

Example:

  1. Open SharePoint list
  2. Select list item
  3. Click "Copy Link" or "Share"
  4. Select any of the share options (They were specifically trying "People with existing access")

  1. Click "Apply"
  2. Copy the URL

7. Any users attempts to use URL = Error Message (See Above)

This occurs for all of the site specific users, but also for all of our SharePoint Admins who have looked at the issue so far. The list in question is a modern list on a SharePoint Online site. Just to test I tried to use the list in "Classic" view, but you also run into the same error when you attempt to even just view on item in "Classic" mode.

Any help or troubleshooting suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for the information. I will check the site out for a page library with content approval turned on. Also I will go ahead and contact Microsoft Support as well. Just wanted to check here first.

    Thanks again for the help!

    Dear Chris LeMay,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

I went through your question, and it seems your SharePoint users are experiencing an error with one of their SharePoint lists when they share a specific item on that SharePoint List, using Copy link or Share options.

I followed your steps, and tested from my side, and tried different share options, but I couldn't meet the same behavior!

As you said that this occurs to all of the site specific users, and SharePoint admins, both in SharePoint online Modern and classic view, and it is a specific list with a problem, I'm afraid that this may need to involve our colleagues from another team to check for this issue from the back end, because we may not have enough resources to check from the back end. For this matter, kindly contact Microsoft Support following instructions provided in this link: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Docs. Expert Engineers from that side will help you look into this issue, and help you out.

I also searched a lot about this error message and found some related information, which says that this error may occur if a list view web part that is consuming a publishing or pages library has the option "Require Content Approval" checked.

You may check and turn off Require content approval for submitted items on the pages library, if it is turned on. For more information, check this article: Sorry, something went wrong error on a Site Page with a Pages library web part added - SharePoint | Microsoft Docs.

Meanwhile, as you contact support, you may share along some answers to the below questions so that it can be easy for Engineers to narrow down the issue:

    1. Does this issue happen when you try to share any item from that list or a specific item from a specific list?
    2. If you try to share the link using other options such as "People in Contoso with this link", does the issue occur?
    3. When did this issue begin? did you make some changes in the site/list settings?
    4. Was this sharing option working before with out any errors in this problematic list?

Thank you for your kind understanding and cooperation. Hope you have a great day and stay safe!

    Sincerely,

    Edwine | Microsoft Community Moderator
