Cross- Reference custom caption labels lost... again

I am doing a final review of a document. I've used custom caption labels in cross-references for years, but in the past year or so something is happening and these are lost. as a result, i get Error! Reference source not found. at the locations they are referenced.

Naturally, this has happened, again, just when i am ready to submit a months-overdue report.

Can this be repaired without recreating the custom label in Insert Caption and re-referencing them all through the report?

Cross-references make use of bookmarks in Word, and cross-references are vulnerable because bookmarks are vulnerable.

The problem is that you can easily redefine the range which a bookmark encloses, by mistake and without realizing what you have done (because cross-reference bookmarks are hidden in Word). This happens when you press Enter and/or add content at the beginning of a bookmarked item. Word expands the bookmark which may result in an incorrect cross-reference.

Long-term, you need to avoid adding content or pressing Enter at the beginning of a bookmarked/cross-referenced paragraph.

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out to us today. I’m Kevin and I’m happy to to help you out with your question today.

I'm afraid there is no way to repair these automatically. You could try Kutools for Word as an add-in.
