Problem with Default Content Types in Document Sets

I am trying to enable a default content type in a document set. I tried to configure this by going into the Document set settings, selecting the allowed content types and the default content type. Afterwards, when I try to drag and drop a file into my document set, it does not upload as the default content type. Instead it uploads as the next content type in the list under my library settings. I've spoken to other users that have encountered the same problem.

How can I resolve this issue?

    Hi George,

Thank you for your reply, but that does not resolve the issue. I do not want add a template to the content type. My library has multiple types of document sets and each document set has their own content type. I want to configure the appropriate content type to the doc set, so that when I drag and drop a file into the doc set, it automatically adds the correct content type without me having to edit the properties (see screenshots below).

    1. In the Document set settings, I select the Default content type

    1. When I go into the Document set and click 'New Document' I can see the default content type I selected is there.

    1. But when I drag and drop a file into the doc set and it does not upload as the default content type. It chooses another content type that exists in my library, but I don't want this content type to be an option in this document set.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to fix this.

    Thank you!

    CM

    Hi CM_200,

    Thanks for posting back.

According to your description, I have tested on my side, and I can reproduce the same situation. Based on my search, uploading a document will not assign your default content type, and the default content type should work when you click the New button to create file. It should be normal behavior. Here is a thread where members discussed a similar question. Also, Joel Hill mentioned a workaround, please check if it helps.

    Regards,

    George

    Hi George,

    My responses below

    1. Does the situation only exist in uploading file? It only exists when I drag and drop a file.

What if you click the New button to create a new file, and choose the RFA doc, does it display the right content type? If I select new and upload a file I can select the right content type. However, I will need to upload multiple documents at the same time and would like to use the drag & drop feature, then Quick Edit to quickly edit the column information.

    1. May I reconfirm you can change to the content type RFA doc by editing the properties of the file? Yes I can change the content type in the properties of the file, but like I mentioned above, this takes more time and does not allow me to use the 'quick edit' function.

    Thank you,
    CM

    Hi CM_200,

    Sorry for my late reply.

According to your description, when you drag a file into the document set, it isn’t uploaded as the content type RFA doc, but is uploaded as the content type NGO doc. If my understanding is right, to troubleshoot the situation, I would like to collect more information.

    1. Does the situation only exist in uploading file? What if you click the New button to create a new file, and choose the RFA doc, does it display the right content type?
    2. May I reconfirm you can change to the content type RFA doc by editing the properties of the file?

    Regards,

    George

    Hi CM_200,

Thanks for posting in the community.

According to your description, for “when I try to drag and drop a file into my document set”, do you just want to upload the document to the existing Document Set or you want to upload the document as template to the content type?

If you just want to upload the document to the existing Document Set, according to the following screenshot, please make sure the Document Set is not configured to automatically create default content.

    For your reference:

    Create and manage Document Sets

If you want to upload the document as template to the content type, generally, you can try the steps in the section “Upload Document Templates If needed” of this article.
