I returned my assignment back to myself by accident. But now the hand in again button isn’t working it just says “working on opening in edit mode please refresh and try again” and i’ve tried and tried again and it’s still not working .

As there is no "hand in" button in Word, I assume that it is on a website of your educational institution and if that is the case, you will need to have someone from there address the issue.
If that is not the case, show us a screen shot that illustrates the issue.
