I want to use a security key for 2FA. In account options, there is no way to set it to be used "for verification", only "for account sign in". How do I change this setting?

    Hello Max H,

I’m Gunasekar and I will be happy to help you with your question, I am a Microsoft consumer.

Note that multifactor authentication includes Mobile authentication, Alternate e-mail address, or Phone number. To receive a security code instead of 2FA, you might need to change or Add a phone number to your Microsoft account. But the first priority will be given to Mobile authentication. That is you have to Acknowledge the input received on the Mobile device.

You can add either an e-mail address as Security info or a Phone number.

    1. Follow the steps below to change/add the security info on the Microsoft account.

-Scroll down and select "manage your security info". -Sign in with your Microsoft account. -Select Show more verification methods. -Select I don't have any of these.

    • Select, Since you don't have access to your current security info, and follow the steps to complete the process.

Your new security info will be changed.

Add a phone number or e-mail address to your Microsoft account (Related article for your reference)

Unfortunately, the only options provided for login are app or text, as seen in the screenshot (personal information redacted). I have a security key associated with my account, but the login process does not allow it to be used as the second factor.

Hello, I am Leonielhou, an Independent Advisor and a user like you, I am happy to help clarify any questions you may have.

All I know is that you can not change what options are shown in there for verification. And 2FA is only used during signing in, and sign in only.
