Hi,

I am trying to align some social media icons so that they are the same height/size/distance apart.

I can't find the format tab in word - how can I do this?

    Hi Fiona

I'm AnnaThomas and I'd happily help you with your question. In this Forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.

To align objects such as social media icons in Word, you can use features such as Alignment Guides or Gridlines. By enabling Alignment Guides or Gridlines in Word, you can place your items neatly on the page and lined up for a consistent and professional appearance. You can also customize the settings for each feature per your preference.

To turn on Alignment Guides, go to the Layout tab and select the Align drop-down arrow in the Arrange section of the ribbon. Pick “Alignment Guides” to place a checkmark next to the feature to enable it. When you see the object that you’re dragging lined up with the guides, simply release to place it in that spot.

Are these icons inserted as images, or are they font characters? If images, are they In Line with Text or wrapped? An image (whether wrapped or inline) can be roughly sized by dragging a corner, but to get exact sizes (to make the icons the same height), you will need to use the formatting tools. When you select an image, the contextual Picture Format tab becomes available. On the far right end of the tab are the size controls:

In order to use the alignment tools, you have to have wrapped images. When you select two or more images, you can use the Align Objects button to open this menu:

The default setting is Align Selected Objects, but if you select Align to Margin or Align to Page, the two Distribute commands become available.

That really helped with sizing many thanks.

I don't seem to be able to get the option to distribute evenly.

The icons are pictures, and there are 4 of them, when I highlight them and click on Align, the distribute options are greyed out still.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

I must be doing something wrong I cant see the guides - "When you see the object that you’re dragging lined up with the guides, simply release to place it in that spot." I think I'm nearly there, and have sized them now with the help of Suzanne but distributing them evenly is not happening for me. I will keep playing. Thanks.

Have you changed the setting from "Align Individual Objects" to one of the other options? You have to do that to make the Distribute options available.
