Multiple GoDaddy Email + Office 365 AND Microsoft Office 365 Subscriptions

Question

I have two domains which are maintained by GoDaddy. One (I'll call it Mi-C.com) is for my work. the other (I'll call it Ma-L.com) is for personal business. I had GoDaddy business email on Mi-C.com) for years under a business account. I also had 5 emails (personal, wife and kids) under MaL.com for years as well. I had been using (CD/ upgrades by downloads) desktop versions of Word, Outlook, Excel, etc)

A few years ago, I got an email from GoDaddy offereing a discount and link to Office 365 (SAS)so I bought it and switched my desktop programs at my business to Microsoft Office 365 which gave me the ability to share the Office Suite with my family members and I did that using their MaL.com email addresses. I still used same domain and email at GoDaddy.

Then GoDaddy rather abruptly forced all accounts onto Office 365 - was pretty much same price so did not mind but thought it was odd. I suspected, and I was right, that they would later try and charge individual subscriptions for Office 365 for each email account. (They also don't offer the family plan email anymore)

I tried to buy a new Office 365 Plan for MaL.com but it won't let me register that (probably because my family members accounts at GoDaddy show they have Office 365 through MaL.com (which I don't need, want or want to pay extra fees for). In checking I found I have been paying for Office 365 through GoDaddy AND thru Microsoft for several years. I do NOT care about the duplicate payments except that I want to get off of GoDaddy- (poor support, poor business practices) I do not want to change my families email addresses (I own both domains and they like their addresses)

I saw a similar question on Support site from a guy at a historical society (with no direct answer - they went offline to resolve).

like him, at some point my base level subscription to Office 365 through GoDaddy was subscribed to using the GoDaddy email addresses, which all the same email addresses the Microsoft accounts were registered to. What this means is that I'm being charged for the full Office suite through Microsoft, but any time my family attempts to log in to download the apps they get forwarded to GoDaddy's login page for Office, which then says you don't have administrator permission to download the Office applications.

I too would like to end up with a full office subscription for my MiC.com account and email and a family subscription for my personal and family stuff (MAL.com) and have been told I have to first cancel the GoDaddy Family subscriptions, but I cannot be without email for even a few hours given the nature of my business (and my families' voracious use of email - with a wedding coming up in the next few months). GoDaddy says they will likely take several days to release links so I can add new subscription through Microsoft.

As the other guy said- this is a real "Kobayashi Maru here" but I am hopeful there is a way out. Suggestions?

Unfortunately, you need to cancel it and have the accounts removed from office 365 first.

Nights and weekends are often a good time to do this - late Sat / early Sunday is often a slow mail time. It should only take a few minutes for GoDaddy to delete it - but they will probably tell you it will take hours.

One option is to set up a forwarding account for your domain - you can change the MX records in DNS to use another mail server while you wait for GoDaddy. I used forwardemail.net when I needed to forward mail temporarily. But - if you do this at a typically slow email time (and godaddy doesn't drag their feet), you can avoid this.

Are you going to move the family accounts to a consumer Microsoft 365 family subscription? There isn't much you do to prepare but have GoDaddy cancel the office 365 subscription and remove the domain from Microsoft 365. Before doing this, have the users export their mailboxes to a pst using outlook desktop software - they may need to change the sync settings in File > Account Settings > Account Settings. Double click on the account to see if the slider is set to All.

If you are moving the work domain to a business Microsoft 365 tenant, you can get everything ready but the domain - then when its released by godaddy, you can add it to your new tenant and mail will flow almost immediately (if you did not change the DNS to another server - then it might take longer.) Don't forget to export the entire mailbox to a pst file!
