Compacting a full Access 97 database

I have an Access 97 database (dont ask!)

The main file .MDB file has hit the 1Gb limit. I ran a cleanup but it appears to hang. It ran over night but did not complete.
I suspect that Access needs some database space in order to do its clean up.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Ian

PS
I saw a post by John W Vinson regarding version upgrades, not sure if he is still available. I dont know how to contact him either.

    Hi,

Have you tried to create a new mdb and import all objects from the big mdb into the new one?

This often helps to get back a file size that can be compacted as usually it's not just data that fills the file.

If you succeed then reduce the file size by splitting it up into separate files (backends?) or outsourcing pictures or whatever bloats the file.
