Can set automatic wrapping functions when inserting a picture?

Two questions 1) every time I insert a photo, pdf, etc I have to fight with the wrapping functions several times before I’m able to move it around. Can this be reset or turned off somehow?

  1. since I used to use Publisher, I’m not used to having to open a document and basically work inside a text box. Is there a way to not start it as a text doc?

Reliably placing content has always been a challenge in Word because the Layout dialog is seldom covered properly in training classes.

Agreed... Having taught both word processing & desktop publishing for more than 20 years using material provided by curriculum developers with questionable knowledge I fully appreciate the point. Word documents are based on a text stream design whereas publishing programs are based on an object-oriented structure. It's a hard pill to swallow for anyone moving from the latter to the former 🤓

Note that the user is using a Mac, not q Windows PC & has posted to the Mac Word Community. What you suggest in your first paragraph is the =right idea but is misdirected for a Mac user.

Also, there is no Publisher available for Mac & placing images in text boxes simply compounds the problem.

Go to Word> Preferences _ Edit then choose the preferred method from the Insert/Paste pictures as menu.

With all due respect for the accuracy of your reply & the extent to which you've gone, I didn't write that it couldn't be done, but everything you've documented requires overt effort on the part of the user. My response to the OP was in the context of her stating that existing objects were being pushed off the page by the insertion of other objects. That is what I have never seen happen.

Sorry I overlooked the 2nd question in your message, but the answer to it is Yes, just type.

Publisher is a totally different category of software. It's a desktop publishing program whereas Word is a word processing program. They're based on completely different programming designs & document structures.

One of the primary differences is that in desktop publishing virtually everything has to be to be within a container of some sort whereas in word processing documents it's just the opposite - the fewer containers, the better.

Another major difference is that in publishing the containers are positioned on pages but in word processing objects [i.e., pictures, text boxes, charts, etc.] are like foreign bodies inserted into the text flow.

This timeless article should prove useful in helping you to better understand how the program works: Word Doesn’t Know What a Page Is
