Excel Cursor Problem

I am using Excel via Microsoft 365 apps for business on a Surface Laptop 4. All software is up to date. Increasingly, I click on one cell and pointer ends up on another cell 4-5 rows and 1-2 columns away. The only solution that works is to close the file and reload which is a huge time suck -- resizing the window, minimizing then maximizing the window, etc. does not help. How do I fix this?

    Dear Jonathan Burleigh,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on your description, we learned that when you click on a certain cell in Excel, the cursor will end up positioning to other cells. I want to know if my understanding is correct, and if my understanding is incorrect, please feel free to correct me.

If my understanding is correct, I didn't experience the same situation in my tests, so I would like to ask you to try the following suggestions first:

Try creating a new workbook to see if you still encounter the same situation. If cursor positioning errors do not occur in the new workbook, try manually copying the text into the new workbook .

This behavior also occurs in the new workbook, please also try the following methods:

    1. Repairing Office from the Control Panel:
Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> right-click on Office applications’ icon -> Change -> Online Repair.
    2. Opening Office apps in safe mode to check whether there is an add-in or extension that may be causing a problem on startup.
    3. Performing a clean boot in Windows determine whether a background program is interfering with your Office application.

Trying the above steps can greatly help us reduce this phenomenon, thank you for understanding that sometimes the initial suggestion may not help you immediately, if you still experience this situation, please inform us of the following information:

    • The version information of Excel you are using (File - Account - version information)
    • When did this start and did you do anything special?

    Sincerely,

    Tin | Microsoft Community Moderator
