SharePoint issue - files appear empty

Hello all,

I am acting as a SharePoint administrator in my organization and I have been contacted by a few of our users about a recurrent issue with one of the folders in their SharePoint library.

Since a few weeks, some of the files in that folder started to appear empty - there is no text, no numbers, just an empty file. In the Version History the most recent version states that one of the users have marked and then deleted all the content in the file. The problem is, none of these users have actually did that (or at least they say they didn't). And as it is happening to more than one users, and more than one file, I don't think it was actually their mistake.

Some points to note, in case important:

  • This affects only this one specific folder in that specific library
  • The library is set up on a SharePoint communications site
  • The Versioning settings for that library are set as default ("Create major versions" +"Keep the following number of major versions: 500", " Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited?: NO")
  • This affects only Word and Excel files
  • For at least one file the file appears empty only in the online version of Word, but when opened in the Desktop app, the content is there

I would be very grateful for any support, advice or even general pointers as to where I could investigate this issue.

Thank you.
