Hi! Friends:

I subscribed to Microsoft 365 Basic Plan (Home). When I want to password protect a folder/file, the password field will ask for a PREMIUM version of One Drive.

Please help.

    Hi! Ravi:

    Thanks again for the reply.

In a nutshell, I am wondering why the password field (below) is blocked, hence unable to protect the chosen folder/file when I am already subscribed to One Drive?

    Regards.

    Lee CC

If you don't have a subscription to Microsoft 365 Family or Personal, you can only add up to three files in your Personal Vault. If you do have a subscription, you can add as many files as you want (up to your storage limit).

Folder lock is not possible outside of vault. If you share any files or folder with anyone, it would be available only for that particular user.

The files on your OneDrive are private until you share them. Keep in mind that when you share folders with Edit permissions, people you share with can add the shared folders to their own OneDrive. https://support.microsoft.com/office/8a63cd47-1526-4cd8-bd09-ee3f9bfc1504

To add a shared folder to OneDrive,

    1. Sign in to OneDrive on your browser with your Microsoft personal account - https://onedrive.live.com/
    2. On the left navigation pane, under OneDrive, select Shared. Files and folders that you can add to your OneDrive are marked Can edit.
    3. Locate the folder you want to add, select the circle in the folder's tile, and then select Add shortcut to My files on the top menu. Or right-click a folder and select Add shortcut to My files

Share the files or folder to specific users,

    1. Pick the files or folders you want to share by selecting its circle icon. a. If you're using List view, select the circle on the left side of the item. You can also pick multiple items to share them together. b. If you're using Tiles view, select the circle in the top right corner of the item. You can also pick multiple items to share them together.
    2. Select Share icon at the top of the page
    3. Under Send Link, select Anyone with the link can edit to open the link settings.
    4. If you're using OneDrive for work or school, you can change the link permissions. Otherwise, skip this step
    5. Once you have set all your link settings and permissions, select Apply.
    6. In the Name, group or email field, start typing the email addresses or contact names of people you want to share with. When you begin to enter info in the box, you can also choose a contact from the list that appears.
    7. Include a message below the Name, group or email field, if you want and Send

    Thanks for the reply.

I prefer not to use the Personal Vault as it allows only THREE files to be protected.

I want to protect ANY folders/files when I shared with someone.

    Thanks again.

    Hello Lee,

Greetings for the day! I’m an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you. Thanks for posting the query here at this forum.

If you have Office 365 subscription, you can do the setup for personal vault in OneDrive to secure the files.

To do the set up, please follow below steps,

    1. The first time you see Personal Vault in your OneDrive, you'll see a message where you can select Get started. Read about Personal Vault and select Next or Continue
    2. In the Verify your identity dialog box, verify your account info and make note of your email address in case you want it for the next step. Then select Verify.
    3. Choose a verification method. For example, select Text and follow the instructions to send yourself a text message on your phone.

To upload or move files from OneDrive to secure folder, kindly verify below link https://support.microsoft.com/office/6540ef37-e9bf-4121-a773-56f98dce78c4
