Why won't excel open my file?

Excel version 2301 crashes on opening. When I try to open the file in Safe Mode, it calculates threads, and crashes when it tries to calculate the spill. I've tried to get a screen capture of this without success. The system generates a new "repaired" version of the file on each fail, but these are corrupt.

I closed the program because it was not correctly evaluating an if statement (=if(1=1,"true","error") returned 0.)

Thanks for your assistance!

    Hi Michael,

Greetings! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community.

If your issue is only on one file, share your file to us to check the file.

If your issue is on all the excel files, please try the following steps to repair your Office, then check again.

Go to Windows Settings> Apps> Apps & features> find the Microsoft Office product> select Modify> then choose Online Repair. After repairing, please restart your device and run Office applications to check again.

If the situation still happens after repairing Office, please install and run the Office uninstall support tool to completely uninstall the existing Office applications, then reinstall Office and check again.

    Best Regards,

    Snow Lu

It is caused by a incorrect formula in you workbook.

I had sent the file back to you via private message. You can check it by clicking the icon below.

    Hi Michael,

Based on the information you have provided, it seems that the Excel file is corrupt and that may be causing it to crash or not open properly. Here are a few things you can try to recover the file:

    1. Try to recover an earlier version of the file: If you have saved multiple versions of the file, you may be able to recover an earlier version that is not corrupt. To do this, go to File > Info > Manage Workbook > Recover Unsaved Workbooks. This will open a folder with any unsaved files that may contain an earlier version of your file.
    2. Use the Open and Repair feature: Excel has a built-in feature called "Open and Repair" that can help repair a corrupt file. To use this feature, open Excel, go to File > Open, select the file, click the drop-down arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
    3. Try to recover the data using a third-party recovery tool: There are several excel recovery tools available that can recover data from corrupt Excel files. Some popular options include EaseUS Data Recovery, Stellar Phoenix Excel Repair, and Recovery for Excel.
    4. If the file is stored on a network drive or external storage device, try copying it to your local drive and opening it from there.

Usually Open and Repair fixes the issue for me. Let me know if it worked for you.

    Best Regards.
