OneNote Signin Loop

Hi,

I use Microsoft 365 OneNote as a Remote Desktop Services "remote app" and have 12 notebooks setup. I frequently have issues with syncing, and when I'm asked to sign in, I get stuck in a loop where it asks me over and over for my account credentials. I populate them, and it prompts me again but never syncs. It causes major issues with my productivity and I'm not finding much as far as a solution is concerned.

Details:

  • Microsoft® OneNote® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2302 Build 16.0.16130.20332) 64-bit which is installed on Windows Server 2019 running Remote Desktop Services.
  • My client PC is running Microsoft Windows V22H2 (OS Build 19045.2728) and utilizes the Remote Desktop Services "remote app" for my office tools.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

~Heather

    Hi Tin,

This is an old request that I didn't realize you'd replied to. I'm still having issues with my OneNote sporadically not syncing and really hoping to get it figured out since it really reduces my productivity. I've stopped using OneNote as a Remote Desktop Services "remoteapp" and have been running OneNote locally on my PC but still have the issue. I also have the issue from other PCs and, in multiple physical locations. It seems if I disconnect my work account from a PC then reconnect, it will sync again for a while.

    • NOBODY else from my organization (5 other people) are having this issue. It's only me.
    • I have no issues accessing the One Note Notebooks if I log in using a web browser.
    • Occasionally, my Outlook client will stop syncing, and show DISCONNECTED on the status bar at the bottom. Usually, a reboot or disconnecting my work account and re-signing in will resolve the issue.

I looked at the article you sent but I'm not clear on determining whether or not my user is a federated user? This has been such a frustrating issue and I'm really hoping to get it resolved once and for all.

    Thanks!

    ~Heather

    Dear db_hmorris,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on your description, we understand that you repeatedly receive sign-in requests, which happens in Windows Server 2019.

First, you can refer to the suggestions in this document to see if it can help you: A federated user is repeatedly prompted for credentials during sign-in - Office 365 | Microsoft Learn

Secondly, I would like to know the following information:

    • Are your colleagues experiencing this behavior as well?
    • Does this also occur if you log in to Office directly from your computer without using a remote device?
    • In addition to OneNote, does this also occur when you try to log in from another app, such as Word?

    Sincerely,

    Tin | Microsoft Community Moderator
