How to delete files from "Microsoft 365(Office)"

When I open "Microsoft 365(Office)" it is showing a lot of files saved in it but when I try to delete any of them it just doesn't give me the option to do it. Strangely the files saved in "Microsoft 365(Office)" don't show up in "File Explorer" nor in "Downloads" and nor in "My Content" on "One Drive"

Only one file that I intend to keep saved shows up in my "One Drive' and "Microsoft 365(Office)". When i try to open the other files(that i dont intend to save" it shows a notification "sorry we couldn't find the document". When i press "Ok" it shows another pop up notification that says "Microsoft Excel cannot access the files. There are several possible reasons:

  • The file name or path does not exist
  • The file is being used by another program
  • The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook."

So please kindly help me in this regard as the unintended files are taking up my could storage. Thankyou

    Hi Hamza Z!

I am Shakiru, an independent advisor and a user like you, and I am glad to be helping you out today.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble delete files on the Word app

It's possible that the files you are seeing in the Microsoft 365 (Office) app are actually links to files that are stored in OneDrive, rather than the actual files themselves. If this is the case, then you may not be able to delete these files directly from the Microsoft 365 (Office) app.

To delete these files, you will need to go to OneDrive or SharePoint and delete them from there.

Here's how you can do it: * Go to the OneDrive website https://onedrive.live.com/ where the files are stored. * Find the files that you want to delete and select them. * Click the "Delete" button or press the "Delete" key on your keyboard. * Confirm that you want to delete the files.

Once you delete the files from OneDrive, they should no longer appear in the Microsoft 365 (Office) app.

Kindly let me know, if you require additional assistance, I will be glad to help further.

    Best Regards, Shakiru

They make it hard to delete files because they want to pressure you into buying more storage... classic exploitative consumerism.

Thanks for the instructions...but they don't work.

When you say to "select" the file to delete... do you mean to "hover" over it or click on it?

When I hover and hit the delete key nothing happens.

When I click on it it opens the document.

    Thanks!
