Mail Merge Date Error

Hello!

Every month I do a mail merge from excel to make letters in word. All the data I'm trying to merge is successful, except for the dates. I have tried multiple times to clear formatting, ensure that the cells are listed as dates in my desired format but no matter what I try without fail it enters the word document as random numbers. In my merge fields I've used the toggle codes and tried various things there too.  Example: 12/21/2025 turns into 46012. If there are words in the same cell as the date it usually merges fine. I used to be able to put a (.) period behind each date to get it to merge but that hasn't been successful lately for whatever reason.
