I have a user who is getting the following error when trying to open a shared document: Your account doesn't allow editing on a Mac.

They have the following license: Office 365 A1 for faculty. Will giving them a Microsoft 365 Apps for Faculty license resolve this issue?

Microsoft 365 and Office | Install, redeem, activate | For education | MacOS

    Dear respected Ben Macharia,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

As per your description, I believe in your Office 365 education (A1 for student) account doesn’t contain the license “The latest desktop version of Office” and that's why you cannot see use/active Office desktop client app on your Mac OS.

Please understand Office 365 education (A1 for student) subscription account only have Office for web(online), it doesn't contain Office desktop client app license.

For your reference: Microsoft 365 Education

Since, you don't have “The latest desktop version of Office” license, if you don’t have this license, it means that you cannot activate/use Office suit. Admin may need to assign the related license to you.

Office 365 A1 plus picture I share with you. (Effectively Office 365 A1 for student's plan doesn't have Office 365 desktop) If you need Office for app, you need to have Office 365 A1 Plus at least.

    .

In the meantime, I advise you to have Office 365 A1 Plus, to be able to get Office 365 desktop.

Appreciate your patience and understanding and thank you for your time and cooperation.

    Sincerely,

    Waqas Muhammad
