Subtotal function ignoring Row 1 as column headers

When using Data- Subtotal function for a selected section, Excel has decided to exclude row 1 (my column headers) from the selection and uses Row 2 as headers. If I proceed to use the Subtotal function from here, it will exclude data that was included on Row 2 from calculations.

Example- a spreadsheet (which I use every month) which is not and does not contain any tables. contains individuals' names, category in which they belong, raw data and number values. row 1 contains names/labels for each of the columns for the data it contains (Name, category, number of thing). When I select from above columns A-M (the columns that contain the entirety of data) and click Subtotal, the box created around the data excludes row 1 and starts at row 2, through the final row.

There is no option to check a box that says "my data has headers" like the Sort & Filter function does. There is no place I can find within the program or on the entire internet that shows me how to mark this row as data headers and to mark that row 2 contains data to be included in calculations.

This question was asked in January 2020, but is marked as Closed, although the question was never resolved.

I use this template monthly and have used it for years.

I've worked around this issue by inserting a row above my current Row 1, and leaving it blank. When I select the columns and Subtotal, there is a warning "Microsoft Excel cannot determine which row.... column labels", and if I select OK it will proceed using the first row (which is blank now) as labels.

when I click OK, it moved forward and used now-Row 2 (originally row 1, containing the column headers) as the "At each change in:" ...

... However, as I try to replicate this now, it isn't working the same and is actually providing a subtotal for Row 2 (the headers) as if they were data.

I have scoured the internet and everything refers to Tables (there are no tables, I haven't created a table and any attempt to remove an accidental table is met with 0 tables available to remove) or to Sorting (not sorting, the information has already been sorted appropriately and I was able to check the box to instruct the Sort & Filter that "my data has headers")
the internet doesn't know what's wrong.

Thank you for responding. But the screenshot I was trying to include was of the work-around for the problem. I can't capture the issue itself without sharing protected information. My description is pretty in-depth.

You may use some dummy data to give us a screenshot. Then we may reproduce your issue to find the cause.

    Thank you for your understanding.
