Hi all, an excel database was shared with me via SharePoint. I received the link. When I click the link, the excel opens in internet browser. I want to sync it to my computer/onedrive and work there as a normal excel and data will be automatically uploaded in the original file. How can I do it? It is not a folder to click on Sync but this is a direct file?

    Dear respected  RahmaniRahmat,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

As per your description, firstly may I know does the shared Excel database file via SharePoint online shared with your organization/same Office 365 tenant or shared by other organization?

Generally, if a business user shares a file with a business user: (within tenant/same organization), The business shared file will show up in the OneDrive for Business “shared with me” section, the business user can select the file and click on "Add Shortcut to my files" and the sync it.

However, when the shared file sends by outside of organization and in this scenario, when User A shares a file with User B who is outside of organization, then User B will receive an email with the link to access shared item and will not see the shared file in Shared view in his/her OneDrive library. And We only can access through outlook email link.

If the file shared by outside of organization, then I'm sorry and I'm afraid to say that. if the file is accessed through a shared link in SharePoint, it is not possible to directly sync it to your computer like a traditional OneDrive folder sync.

In such cases, instead of shared file link via SharePoint you may let owner use B2B Sync and outside sync shared files.

    Hi Waqas Muhammad,

Many thanks for the information and guidance. Our case is the first senario (same organization); however, this is a file, NOT A FOLDER. When I click on the file (excel), there is no "Add Shortcut" in the top while it is for folder. So, is there any alternative?

    Thanks,

    Hi respected  RahmaniRahmat,

Thanks for your valuable feedback and sharing updates with us and I really appreciate your effort and your precious time doing.

And I appreciate your kind words.

    First please accept my apologize.

If the file shared by same organization, then the file appears in Shared section in your OneDrive library. Yes, for file there is no "Add Shortcut to my files" in the top (its only for Folder), I'm afraid as a workaround you may select the file and click on "Copy link" and in your OneDrive add a link, here is screenshot for your reference:

Or you may click on "download" button and then again upload into your OneDrive file to sync into your computer.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,

    Waqas Muhammad
