How to create custom columns in SharePoint AND quickly edit them

I have a couple of custom columns I'd like to quickly add data too. Issues:

  • Constantly opening the SP view from Teams is a pain.
  • The custom columns appear on EVERY other list in the channel and view need to be created and I would think that any custom column would only be added to THAT specific library.
  • Constantly changing to a specific view for each list is a pain and WILL NOT happen by all our users.
  • Changing the default view for a specific list changes it to the default view for ALL the other lists in that channel. These new columns are specific to the individual library list and have absolutely no purpose or meaning for anywhere else.
  • Clicking to Edit in grid view to add data to the column often results in an error. Even though the data entered is not an error. For example, one column is either yes or no. SP will show an error with those entries which then causes me to go down a rabbit hole to try and resolve thus taking up a LOT of time researching WHY this simple yes/no column results in an error.

    Dear Kriss,

    Good day!!

Apologies for the inconvenience caused and please don’t worry, let’s work together on your concern and move towards a resolution path.

As per the description shared, I believe there is some confusion with the SharePoint Online site associated with the teams and let me take a chance to explain the functionality of the Teams associated with the SharePoint Online site:

    1. When a Team in the Microsoft Teams is created, a SharePoint Online site with the same team’s name will be created and the main purpose of the SharePoint Online site for storing the files that you have uploaded to the channel in the Team of the Microsoft Teams.
    2. Each channel in the team of the Microsoft Team is a folder in the default document library of the SharePoint Online site. So, every folder and sub-folders in the Document Library and every channel in the Team will have same custom columns and default column on the library.
    3. Moreover, in the SharePoint Online Document Library or List it’s not possible to set the different views for folders in the Document Library, where it’s a by design feature in the SharePoint Online.

I agree with the inconvenience caused due to the by design feature in the SharePoint Online and integration of SharePoint Online with Team in Microsoft Teams and I suggest you to add your valuable idea as feedback in the SharePoint · Community (microsoft.com) which is the best place to share our ideas and improve the Microsoft products.

Regarding adding the data to the custom columns with Editing the data in the Grid View, can you please share the error message encountering because we were not able to reproduce the problem when using the Edit in the grid view? Moreover, the behavior of the adding the metadata to the columns in the Library is not similar with the List, where in the Library you add the data either via Edit in grid view or selecting the file> Open in the details pane> Adding the data to the columns.

If there is any misunderstanding, we are sorry and request you to share some more information which will help us to better understand and guide you further.

Appreciate your patience and understanding. Have a great day!!

    Best Regards,

    Sophia
