Leave family group (organiser)

I am trying to remove myself as the organiser in a family group (I have already setup a new organiser with a different email). The email I use as organiser is the same as the MS account (not sure whether this is part of the problem). It offers the option of Leave but does not offer Manage Consent which I understand is a prerequisite of leaving. Why am I trying to do this? I have a different MS account with a 365 Family Subscription and I am trying to invite this email (my default email) to join this family subscription. When I try to accept the invitation, it won't let me as it states that I am a member of a diffferent family group, but I can't see any way of leaving that group. All help would be much appreciated.

    Hi David,

I was having the exact same problem as you and it was maddening me but I finally figured it out.

I think the problem is that we think that the system is telling us to remove manage consent for our own organiser accounts which we are trying to remove, and the system does not allow us to do that for our own organiser account. So we are stuck.

What it is actually telling us to do is to remove consent from all OTHER member accounts under the family group BEFORE you can remove yourself as an organiser. It's quite confusing but I believe this is the key.

So to fix the issue I did this:

    1. Remove consent from AND remove my childrens and other family MEMBER accounts from the family group. Make sure you do both steps for all MEMBER accounts.
    2. Add a microsoft account in your wifes name (or whatever) and have them join your family group as an ORGANISER.
    3. Proceed to remove yourself (David Hills) as an organiser/member of the family group. The system should allow you to do this and not throw up any barriers relating to consent etc. You will be no longer part of the family group.
    4. Log in to your wifes account which is now the sole organiser. Send out an invite to David Hills account to join as a MEMBER. Accept that . Repeat for any other kids accounts you want as members etc.

The end result is you will have swapped organisers from your account to your wifes. She will be sole organiser, you will be a member and so will your kids once re-added.

In logging back and forth between accounts make sure you open up a new browser each time and go to the microsoft account login screen and login as normal.

This helped me a lot because I want to activate screen time for my sons Xbox but couldnt because he was playing on my account as an organiser (all his purchases and saved games and ranking stuff was on there). and you cant apply screen time to an organiser account. This allowed me to demote my account from organiser to member and apply screen time without him losing all his gaming stuff.

To remove someone from a family group, sign in and click remove - this doesnt work as a message comes up saying 'You'll need to remove consent first' and there is no option for doing this.

The esay workround is to add an alternate or common email as an Organiser - I have done this and I'm still unable to remove the family member. NB per the link. this was the same experience as Ravikuma so I don't know why you are still promoting this.

    Can anyone else help?

I have already done this as I thought there might be a check to prevent a family group not having an organiser. My family group now has 2! (NB there are other family members not shown below). I am trying to remove 'You', the organiser since 2021, and have recently created 'David' using a different email. Trying to remove 'You' presents the Leave family group option but then tells me I need to remove consent first, which I am unable to do.

The account I am trying to remove is an adult (organiser) account. The 3 dots do not offer the Manage Consent option (this is avaialbale on the child accounts in the family group). Instead, there is a 'Leave family group option' which, when selected shows -

When I select Remove I get the following -

BUT, I can find no means of removing consent

    Hello David,

Thank you for reaching out to this forum. I'm Ravi, just like you, a fellow Microsoft user and I'm here to help you with your question today.

If someone is already part of a family group, they must leave or be removed from that group before joining another. They can also create a new Microsoft account to associate with a new family group.

There are several different ways for family members and organizers to leave or be removed from a Microsoft family group depending on their role.

To remove someone from a family group:

    1. Using a web browser, sign in to family.microsoft.com.
    2. Click next to the person's name and select Remove from family group.
    3. Select Remove to confirm..

    Details here - https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing/6d806bbb-eb38-a978-10f4-3bbb814ffcc4

In the existing family group, as last member there are no option to leave the family group.

The easy workaround would be, if there are alternate email or common email for the family, please try adding it as "Organizer". This alternate ID will give access to remove your account from the old group.
