I need to return this computer so I will need to do a factory reset. My question is how do I protect my files short of copying them to a flash drive. every time I delete a file it states it will be deleted over all devices This is what I want to avoid as I will want to have access to them when I get the next desktop.

    Hello,

Thank you for coming to the forum. My name is Fuad, and I'm happy to help you in the best way I can.

Note, I am a user like you, this is a user forum and not Microsoft directly.

That message is because you have OneDrive still running on the device, you need to unlink it.

But please nothing beats, doing a backup to an external drive (or flash drive). After your backup is done, unlink the OneDrive, then do the factor reset.

Unlink OneDrive Click the OneDrive Icon on taskbar > Click settings (gear icon) > go to the account tab > click unlink this PC

    Click the link below: https://support.office.com/article/3c4680bf-cc36-4204-9ca5-e7b24cdd23ea

    I kindly await a reply for a follow-up

    Best Regards Fuad
