PowerPoint embedding fonts that aren't being used

I am trying to embed fonts in my PowerPoints, but when I save my PowerPoint, there is a "Save with Fonts" error with fonts listed that I am not using in my PowerPoint.

PowerPoint Specs:

Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac

Version 16.75 (23070901)

License: Microsoft 365 Subscription

Machine Specs:

MacBook Pro 13" M2 2022, 8 GB RAM, macOS Ventura 13.5

Error (since image attaching isn't working at the moment):

| Some of your fonts cannot be saved with the presentation. Save the presentation anyway? | | Cannot be saved: | Reason | | --- | --- | | KievitSlabOT-Book | Font Not Available | | Gill Sans | Unsupported font file format (AAT) | | Gill Sans Bold | Unsupported font file format (AAT) | | Gill Sans Italic | Unsupported font file format (AAT) | | Gill Sans Bold Italic | Unsupported font file format (AAT) | | Bree EB | Font Not Available |

The only two fonts I am using are:

  • Luckiest Guy
  • Roboto Slab

When I try to use the "Format>Replace Fonts..." utility, it will not let me replace those fonts. For example, trying to replace "Gill Sans" with "Roboto Slab" does not work. "Gill Sans" still shows up in the "Replace" field, and in the error when trying to save.

I have also tried turning the embedding features off, saving, and re-embedding, but I get the same error.

Opening and closing the PowerPoint works, and viewing the PowerPoint works, but anytime I click "Save" this error occurs.

How do I get rid of these fonts from my PowerPoint and from being embedded when they aren't in the PowerPoint at all, and are not installed on my machine either?

The unreplaceable fonts have most likely been used for bullet formatting. Here's my article on this issue in PowerPoint for Mac: PowerPoint Font Embedding – Best Practices

As the article mentions, this is easily fixable in Windows, but not in MacOS. You'll have to manually check every bullet at every text level in the slide master and layouts, the notes and handout masters and all slides.

Thank you for the quick and helpful response. The section at the very bottom, PowerPoint Font Embedding – Fixing a Problem, was extremely useful. The XML solution was exactly what I needed. My workplace was able to provide me with a Windows machine to fix this, since it is a hassle on Mac. Thank you!
