Cannot close personal Microsoft account

I am trying to close a personal Microsoft account, but when I try to close it I get a message saying that "You need to leave your work organization", with a link to log in to a previous employer's Office 365. Of course I cannot do that, nor can I contact them about this.

The same email address is used for both the work account (with the previous employer) and the personal Microsoft account. I cannot touch the work account, but I would like to be able to close the personal account, since I do not wish it to be associated with the previous employer.

    Hi Shakiru,

Thank you for your quick reply and trying to help me. I have added a new alias and removed the old one, so now there is nothing in the account (that I can see) that points to my former employer.

However, I still get the message "You need to leave your work organization" when I try to close the account afterwards. I will try to give it 24 hours and see if I have more luck then.

    Hi JonasDKP!

I am Shakiru, an independent advisor and a user like you, and I am glad to be helping you out today.

I understand you are unable to close your Microsoft Personal account because the same email is used as a Work account.

To be able to do that, you would need to add a new alias (email) to your Microsoft Personal account and then make the new alias the primary alias, remove the other from your account close it.

    To do that

Then you can go ahead to close your Microsoft Personal account afterwards.

I hope this helps! Please kindly let me know if you need any other assistance and I will be more than happy to help further.
