Excel error when updating Pivot Tables / An issue with the Data Model is preventing Microsoft Excel from opening this workbook. Try restarting Microsoft Excel

Hi team,

I am from IT Department of an organization.

One of the customers sent me a file and the pivot tables cannot be refreshed.

When we tried to refresh the pivot table, it will get stuck with "Loading Data Model..."

And get this error message:

There are several connections, but not queries if I open "Queries & Connections".

And I get the same error if I want to delete any of it or check its properties.

What I have done here:

  1. Reboot
  2. Repair Office
  3. Try a different machine
  4. Open in Safe Mode
  5. Refresh anyway
  6. Use Sharepoint to open (Excel Online)
  7. Uncheck/Check this option as I found it on the Internet

None of the above helps.

And I tried to change it to zip file.

  1. I tried to delete xl/model folder. Well, I don't see the error message because the tables are no longer considered as pivot tables.
  2. I tried to delete connections.xml and it cannot be opened. I got prompt that the file is corrupted.

Please help with this. Thanks.

Could you share us that file (without sensitive information) to reproduce your issue? Then we may help you find the cause of it.

For sharing a sample workbook, upload to OneDrive or any other cloud drives. Then post a link here.

I have tried open data model to check what happened on it. But I cannot open the data model. It could be something corrupt in your file.

I also checked most of the povit tables. It seems there is no need to use data model.

The quickest way I think is to recreate entire workbook. Since your workbook contains much information in it, I'd suggest you raise a ticket to Microsoft.

Create a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center> Support> New service request. That support team there will have the correct channel and resources to help you investigate more and find what exactly the reason has caused this situation.
