Notification Bar symbols are not saved

Hello,

we're using 5 Windows Server 2016 as Remote Desktop Session Hosts with RDS-Broker and User Profile Disks.

After migrating from Server 2012 R2 we experienced the following issue (what worked fine with Server 2012 R2 before):

Every time a user logs on, the symbols displayed in the notification area are resetted. We're using a CTI software and Outlook, what will hide under the arrow, so some users don't find their software to open again.

We can check "Always show every symbol in the notification area", what works well, but there are some useless programms that could disturb users. If we check only the programs the user wants to always be displayed, this setting will reset after logging off and on again.

How to fix this issue? Where is this information stored so we can check, if there are permission issues or whatever?

Best regards from Germany

    Hi,
When you change the taskbar settings, have you first unlocked the task bar? If not the settings will not be remembered. Don't forget to re-lock.

But for better understanding on this issue, we need get more detailed infomation as below:
1, did you use UPD before upgrading? if yes, did you log off UPD before upgrading to 2016?
2, have you test to create a new domain user and local domain user to logon? will issue persist under this account?
3, please check folder: logon Session Host->C->Users->TEMP
4, please check your event log:
go Event Log->Applications and Services Logs->Microsoft->Windows->user profile Service

    Hello Yvonne,

i never had to unlock the task bar in no version of windows to change the symbols displayed in the notification area. I don't have to on other servers and clients running Server 2016 or Windows 10 as well.

    1. Yes, we used UPD before upgrading to Server 2016. What do you mean with "log off UPD before upgrading"? We are using a RD Session Broker, where we just added the new Server 2016 to existing 2012 farm and deactivated the 2012 Servers after that. When users then logged off from a 2012 Server they were logged on to a 2016 Server afterwards, what worked fine. They're still using their same UPDs
    2. This issue persists also on newly created users. I also tried deleting the UPD of one user, so it got newly created and the issue persisted
    3. There is no C:\Users\Temp. The users get their UPDs loaded correctly, with all their deskop icons and other settings they made.
    4. No errors, just some Information-Entries when an admins Object-SID logged on this server, nothing that helps here

    Thanks for your help!

hi, please keep in mind that in the 2016 server you should use the 2016 User Profile. it should be matched. I suspect the User profile isn't replacing with the upgrade. please replace the user profile from 2012.
