I have a Word for mac 16.77.1 365 subscription and I have lost the ability to see the page layout with margins marked up. Where's it gone and how can I get it back?

Also, going to Format then Document then Margins, Left and Right alterations how up on screen but not Up and Down alternations. Why not?

A screen shot might confirm but from your description it sounds like you've merely toggled off the display of what Microsoft refers to as White Space between pages in Print Layout View. That's actually the top & bottom portions of a page above & below the margins where Headers & Footers would display.

To restore the white space, either

  • Go to Word> Preferences> View, check the box for White space between pages in Print Layout View. Or
  • Position the pointer on the top or bottom edge of a page & double-click when the pointer looks like this: Image

Inadvertently double-clicking near the top/bottom of a page is the typical cause.

It can be very useful for those who want the maximum amount of viewing area for content without having Header/Footer space taking up screen real estate... especially if there is no Header or Footer content.

Brilliant, thanks. I can't imagine how I switched that off as I didn't even know it existed. And I can't imagine why anyone would want it either. All good now!!

Hi, Martin A thank you for coming to the forum, my name is Adekunle.its worth noting that this is a user community and we are all users here. while we strive to assist and share insights we are not microsoft.

To see the page layout with margins marked up you need to go to File tab, click Options.Click Advanced, and then select the Show text boundaries check box under Show document content. The page margins appear in your document as dotted lines.

For the Up and down alternation Follow this few steps

    Select Layout > Margins.

    Select Custom Margins.

In Margins, use the Up and Down arrows to enter the values you want.

    Select OK when done.

    Best regards
