Word for Mac cross-reference error message

I'm using Word for Mac (v 16.80) on a MacBook Pro (Apple M2 Max) running OSX 14.1.1.

I have added (automatically numbered) captions to my figures and tables, but when I try to insert a cross-reference to them, I get this error message:

No bookmarks detected. No bookmarks to cross-reference. All other target types are unsafe.

If I create bookmarks, they will show up and I don't get the error. However, the ONLY option I get is to insert a cross-reference to a bookmark. I don't get to choose a Figure or Table.

Obviously if I bookmark the table/figure captions, the numbers aren't going to update as I add/delete/move them around, so that's not a solution.

It looks like a bug to me. Any ideas?

I never have seen this dialog in Word. Are you using some 3rd party add-in? If so you need to contact the support group for the developer of that product.

The Insert> Cross-reference dialog in Word provides access to any Tables & Figures as well as other items. Further, it isn't necessary to Bookmark any captions:

Ah. OK! I use a set of macros called "Editors Toolkit". Uninstalled them and everything went back to normal. Thanks Bob!

No, I'm not using any add-ins. I know how it is *supposed* to work. It just isn't doing what it's meant to!
