when creating a new folder in an established SharePoint Document Library, the folder is not inheriting the default permissions for the library.
One of our groups is being set as "Can View" instead of "Can Edit".

    Dear Jaci,

    Thanks for your updates.

If the folder is set with the unique permissions automatically after it is created. I think that someone may create a flow to do that. If you aren't the administrator or there are some other administrators in the site, I suggest you check with them to see whether some flows are configured causing the behavior.

Thank you for your effort and time.

    Sincerely

this problem is happening when creating a new folder.

the new folder has different permissions than the document library; requiring us to manage access and make changes every time a new folder is created in the library.

    Dear Jaci,

If you share the folder with some users or groups via clicking on ...>Share, the folder will be set with the unique permissions. Please check whether the folder is shared or not.

Meanwhile, I suggest you create a new folder to see whether the issue happens.

Thank you for your effort and time.

    Sincerely
