Editing the index

Can I edit the index so the comma after the word is a colon and the page numbers are separated by a comma? I didn't see that as an option when I checked the editing index box.

To create the index field, click Insert Index (found in the Index group on the References tab).

Once the Index field is present, you can customize it by displaying the field code and adding or editing switches. For example, you can customize some of the separators. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/field-codes-index-field-adafcf4a-cb30-43f6-85c7-743da1635d9e.

Was the index initially created using Word's Index facility? If it was created manually, by typing, there will be no Index field.

In cases when the index is an actual field, there will also be XE fields (index entry fields) and these are formatted as hidden text, meaning that you toggle their display by toggling the display of hidden text.

AutoMark creates the XE fields that are used to generate the index; this will have no effect on the INDEX field. Once your index is generated, you can press Alt+F9 to display field codes and edit the INDEX field directly.

See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/field-codes-index-field-adafcf4a-cb30-43f6-85c7-743da1635d9e for a list of switches you can add to the INDEX field to format it.

Thank you very much! I did not know that the index has a field. However, that explanation was a little tight on the explanation. How can I make {INDEX \e ": "} work with automark?
