    Hello! Paul Eggenberger

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community

It seems to me that you are having trouble opening xlsx files on your desktop through your Excel application. Allow me to ask:

    • What version and edition of Office do you have installed in your device? Example: Personal/Family/Enterprise?
      • You can open any Office apps
      • Go to File > Accounts - on the right side you can see Product Information
    • Is this happening to all files? or just specific file?
    • Are the files locally saved in your device? or in OneDrive?
    • Is the file shared by someone else? or originally created by you?
    • What error message are you getting?

To make Excel the default app for opening .xlsx files on your desktop, you can follow these steps:

    1. Right-click on any .xlsx file on your desktop.
    2. Select "Open With" from the context menu.
    3. Click on "Choose another app."
    4. Select "Excel" from the list of apps.
    5. Check the box that says "Always use this app to open .xlsx files."
    6. Click "OK" to save your changes.

If Excel still does not open .xlsx files on your desktop, you may need to check your file associations settings in Windows. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click on the Windows Start menu and type "Default apps" in the search bar.
    2. Click on "Default apps" from the search results.
    3. Scroll down to the "Set defaults by app" section and click on "Excel."
    4. Click on "Choose defaults for this app."
    5. Check the box next to ".xlsx" and click "Save."

This should ensure that Excel is set as the default app for opening .xlsx files on your desktop. If you continue to experience issues, please let me know and I can assist you further.

    I hope this helps!

    Thank you,
