Outlook email

I just received a popup from Microsoft Outlook to link/sync my yahoo email account with outlook email. If I am not a paying subscriber to Microsoft Office 365 or any other versions, can I/should I still link my yahoo mail with outlook. If I can't because I am not a paying customer, how do I undo the linking that I already did? And if I can, even though not a paying customer (and not going to become one) then what are the pros and cons of doing so?

    Hi Lisa,

Thank you for the kind words.

Regarding your first question: Outlook offers 15 GB of free storage for your emails, shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. Given your usage pattern, you’re likely to have a similar volume of emails in Outlook as you do in Yahoo.

If we assume that your email usage remains consistent, you might accumulate emails at a similar rate. Over time, this could translate to: Hundreds of emails if you continue using email casually. Thousands if you exchange emails frequently. Tens of thousands if you’re an active email user.

Since most of your attachments are single-page, they won’t significantly impact storage. However, if you receive larger attachments (e.g., high-resolution images, PDFs), they’ll consume more space.

Given your usage, Outlook’s free storage should suffice for your needs. If you value the convenience of managing both Yahoo and Outlook emails in one place, linking them can be beneficial. If you ever approach the storage limit, consider periodically archiving or deleting older emails to free up space.

Regarding your second question. Please feel free to describe the problem, and I will try my best to help you.

    I would appreciate your feedback.

    Amadeusz,

I am surprised to have actually gotten such a thorough response. Even while typing out my inquiry, I was silently thinking that I would get a very basic, pre-formed, generic reply, touting the amazing benefits of Outlook and not admitting to any cons. THANK YOU very much for your precision and dedication. PLUS, I can actually understand what you said, rather than having my head left spinning with too much "tech talk". I will read your response again later, and then decide which action to take.

    1. You mentioned storage space in outlook...I am retired, only using email for personal business, so there will not be any large attachments or heavy data files, although, I do save a lot of my emails. So, in terms of just regular old "back and forth" mail between me and say, my insurance agent, or customer service of a retail site, what my bank writes back when I ask about an unrecognized debit card transaction etc., are we talking 100's, 1000's, tens of thousands? I currently have about 2000 saved emails in my free Yahoo account, and perhaps roughly 10% have a single page attachment.
    2. I have a year's long-standing issue with Microsoft in general, it's something I have posted about recently on MS's forum, since you are so helpful and patiently knowledgeable, would you be willing to take a gander? It's really quite trivial (it seems to me) yet no one so far has been able to provide a solution specific to that of which I asked. If not, thank you anyway, you've been delightful, but if so, are you able to search it or shall I retrieve it and send it directly to you for your opinion?

Anxiously waiting to see if you accept this challenge,

    Lisa

    Hi LisaMiller3,

I am an independent advisor, trying to help other users in the Community with my experience in Microsoft products. Please note that I am a user like you and don't work directly for Microsoft.

You do not need to be a Microsoft subscriber to link your Yahoo Mail with Outlook. Whether you’re a paying subscriber or not, you can still integrate your Yahoo account with Outlook. Here’s how:

Adding Yahoo Mail to Outlook: New Outlook for Windows: Go to the View tab and select View Settings. Click on Accounts, then Email Accounts. Choose + Add Account. Enter your Yahoo! account details and select Continue. Follow the prompts, including any two-factor authentication steps. Agree to the Yahoo! account permissions. Your Yahoo emails will appear in the selected folder in Outlook. Classic Outlook: Follow similar steps under the Classic Outlook tab: https://support.microsoft.com/office/ff76dd33-3127-42ac-b93f-1da2dc9054c7

Setting Yahoo as the Primary Account: If you want to set your Yahoo account as the primary one: In View settings, go to Accounts and then Email accounts. Find your Yahoo account and select Manage next to it. Choose Set as the primary account. Close the Settings window.

Undoing the Linking (If Needed): To remove your Yahoo account from Outlook: In View settings, go to Accounts and then Email accounts. Find your Yahoo account and select Manage. Choose Remove and decide whether to remove it from this device or all devices. Close the Settings window.

Pros and Cons of Linking: Pros: Unified inbox, offline access, attachment handling, and Google Meet integration, phishing protection in Gmail. Cons: Spam filtering, storage space, and transition difficulty. Remember, the decision depends on your workflow and preferences

    I would appreciate your feedback.
