The screen shot you've supplied indicates that the files are being saved to your OneDrive account. There is no option to not save a document when using the AutoSave feature available on OneDrive. If you don't name it a generic Document# will be used & the document has to be deleted manually.

These Windows-oriented suggestions are confusing & frustrating to Mac users. Please delete your reply.

Close a document by clicking the red button at the left end of the Title Bar, by using the Command+W keyboard shortcut or by using File> Close in the main menu. If a document contains unsaved changes you should see this prompt:

Either click Don't Save or use the Command+D shortcut. The prompt will not appear if there are no unsaved changes.

Are you saying that the prompt doesn't appear even if changes have been made?

If your experience isn't as described above please provide a detailed description of the steps you are taking & the effect of those steps. Be sure to include the specific Version Number of both Office & macOS in your reply.

Unfortunately "don't save" does not come up. That is why I have to force quit. When I push to close WORD window, this comes up... wanting me to cancel or save... cancel just brings me back to document, it does not close.

Hi, LA. Thank you for coming to the forum. My name is Femi. It is worth noting that this is a user community, and we are all users here, much like yourself. While we strive to assist and share insights, we are not Microsoft directly.

I’m sorry to hear that you cannot close an open Word document without saving first.

in my experience, If you are using Word 2010 or later, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+W to close the current document.

This will prompt you to save the document if you have made any changes.

You can click Don’t Save to close the document without saving or click Cancel if you change your mind.

This will not exit Word, but leave you with a blank document that you can use to create a new document or open an existing one
