Seeing "Error loading add-ins" on Excel on Mac; Sign-In Required will not prompt for password

What I Have Tried/The Context:

  • I uninstalled and redownloaded V16.83 Excel for Mac desktop running Sonoma 14.3OS today through my 365 Subscription.
  • I am logged in to the correct account/email.
  • I have tried to download the Tiller Money Feeds add-in multiple times through the website and through Excel
    • I have tried to download via Safari and Chrome as well.
    • I tried, separately, to download a different add-in (e.g., Wikipedia) which also did not work.
  • I have restarted my computer multiple times.
  • It is a personal computer and I am the administrator with no identifiable security walls.

The Problems:

  1. When I select "My Add-Ins" either from the ribbon or the menu, I am asked to Sign In. According to the Menu bar under Excel, I *am* signed in (though I have tried signing out and signing back in). Regardless, when I select "Sign In", the software does not respond. There is no prompting of a password. Refresh does not help, nor does anything else I have tried. [Image Below]
  2. When I search the store for the add-in, I select to add it, and I receive a message that says, "Error loading add-ins." [Image Below]
  3. When I select THAT, a screen pops-up that says "Office Add-ins" at the top but is otherwise black/blank and appears generally nonfunctional. [Image Below] Often the software itself freezes here and I have to restart entirely.

    Hi Mindy789,

Thank you for reaching out. My name is Leo, a user just like you. I'd be happy to help you with your concern.

It seems that there is an issue with the sign-in prompt that is currently not loading. May I know if you have double-checked if the permissions are allowed? This may sometimes cause the issue. I also recommend refreshing your account by using the license removal tool and reactivating your Office again. Follow the steps below:

"1. Download the license removal tool https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=849815 2. Open the .pkg file from your Mac's Downloads folder. 3. Select Continue and follow the prompts in the setup wizard. 4. When you're ready to complete the license removal, select Install. You may need to enter your Mac's local admin account password.

After the tool successfully removes licenses, select Close.

    1. Now open any Office app and sign in to activate with the email account associated with your Microsoft 365 for Mac license.
    2. Uninstall the License Removal Tool by dragging the Microsoft_Office_License_Removal file from Finder > Downloads to Trash."

Then check if it resolves the issue and check if you are able to access the add-ins. In case the issue still persists, please don't hesitate to let us know. We the community users are always here to help. Thank you!

I pulled the above steps from Official Microsoft Support website. For reference, here's the link below:

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope I provided a helpful information regarding your concern! Let me know if you have any further questions. Be safe always!

    Best Regards,

    Leo

Before chasing symptoms I'd suggest updating Sonoma. Version 14.4.1 ia the current release.

I see that this was marked as the "Answer" but my OS updated that night and unfortunately did not resolve my issue.

No problem... Sometimes moderators mark a reply as an Answer if it seems to be valid with no further response from the OP within a few days.

Frankly, I didn't expect that updating would be the fix. My point was that troubleshooting if all is not current often is a monumental waste of time. You've now eliminated that as a suspect, though, unless it's specific to Sonoma. That leaves the question open, unfortunately. I just installed the Tiller add-in with no problem running v16.84 on Ventura. That suggests the problem is local to your Mac.

Have you tried again recently? If you're still getting the same result see whether it persists if you start the Mac in Safe Mode.

Another diagnostic step is to create a New Standard User Account to determine whether the problem persists when logged in as that user.

Please include the License type as indicated in Excel> About Microsoft Excel & whether the correct credentials are indicated as Belongs to.
