Currently, I am attempting to save/resave an existing document in Word. Word is saving my document is marked as Read-Only and cannot save the updates to my document. I am researching online how to fix this problem and am being directed to find the security preferences in Word. I got to File > Account and cannot location anything about Security. I look in the Save tab with no luck. How/Where do I go to find the security preferences so I can uncheck Read-Only in my document settings.

Thank you for helping me with a silly question!

    Dear mgmcfc34

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Hello, your issue is that saving a document as read-only when saving it is preventing you from saving updates to it. Before I start helping you, I would like to confirm something with you:

    • Is this document saved in the cloud or locally?
    • Is this similar for all of your documents, or is it just this document that is currently unable to save changes made to it?
    • Did you create the document yourself or did someone else send it to you?

If the document is saved locally please find the location of the file and right click on it, select properties and then at the bottom of the window find “Unlock” and click on it, check if your problem is solved.

I also recommend you to send me your file via private message and I will check your file and try to fix it, I have sent you a private message and you can view it by following the steps below:

Click on your avatar in the top right corner of the community page, then click on "My Profile" and find "View Private Messages" in the top right corner of the next page.

Please understand that I may not be able to help you directly in the first response, but I can gradually locate and reach the end of the line in the follow-up, so please be sure to stay in communication with me and let's move forward towards a final solution together.

    Sincerest greetings

    Linn |Microsoft Community Support Specialist
