Which do you run Windows Updates on first?? Host or VMs?

Which do you run Windows Updates on first?? Host or VMs? - I have recently have taken on a role where I support 3 Hosts that serve different locations. I presume the previous admin simply shut down or ?? the VM(s) hosted - ran Windows updates, then rebooted and fired the VM's back up and tested. WHat are the best practices if you cannot vMotion to a different host?

    It doesn't make any difference whether you patch host or guest OS first.
