Microsoft Project Sorting Issue

Anonymous
2024-05-01T12:27:36+00:00

On my project schedule, I have 5 headings (Permitting, Milestones, Procurement, Construction, Closeout) with numerous subtasks under each. I want to sort the activities under each heading by start date, but keep the headings in the order above.

I've tried the custom sort and checked keep the outline structure, along with numerous other things and can't seem to get it to work. Every time I do it, it either reorders the headings, or just jumbles up the entire schedule.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Austin Nastasi,

So it doesn't reorganize "everything", it sorts by start date and keeps the outline structure. But you want to take it a step further and keep the summary structure intact. Okay, can do. Add the Number1 field as a column in the view. Then set the number sequence of the summary groups (e.g. 1 for "Site Work & Utilities", 2 for "Building & Exterior" and so forth). Leave all performance tasks as "0". Now sort by Number1 and then by Start, keeping the option checked to "keep outline structure"

Does that work for ya?

John

I am using Version 2402. When I run the filter, it moves Building Interior first. I think that's because it technically has an activity that starts first, but I want to maintain the grouping shown in the before screen shot.

    Austin Nastasi,

Your filter looks fine but I'm not quite sure what you are trying to show in your second screen shot. I assume it is a snippet of your file before applying the sort.

I emulated you filter and an abbreviation of your file. This is what I have before sorting:

And this is what I get after applying the sort: Note tasks are sorted correctly by start date while maintaining the outline structure.

I'd like to see a screen shot of your file after applying the sort.

What version of Project are you using?

    Austin Nastasi,

A couple pieces of information would be helpful in order for us to help you. First, a screen shot of your file with the 5 headings. Second, a screen shot of your custom sort window.
